Feed a Cat for Christmas! Carol O!!

Carol O. thank you!  Carol makes this donation in honor of Mike and Chris O'Neal.  Thank you Carol for your thoughtfulness and generosity.  The cats out there are fed and love you for it!

Thank God it was a mild morning.  The rain is gone, for now, but will be replaced by snow.  My 'board' (cardboard wrapped in plastic) was still there.  At least the @$%@$ that has been intentionally stealing the board didn't stop by and take it yesterday, or overnight.  I figure this guy must have over 100 of my boards.  What does he do with them?  I hope the feces-covered one that he took the last time got all over his BMW (thank you Maree and Joe for providing this - thanks Cowboy for producing it!).  I am now looking for doors - let's see him fit that in his car.  $#%@.

Fancy Pants spent the night in my tiny bathroom.  FP has turned into a LOVER boy.

Fancy Pants RESCUED!!!

His coat is very dirty - soon that brown in his fur will turn to white.  His tail had so many mats that most of it had to be shaved.  He will join two new brothers, Timber and Finnegan.  Both fluffballs.  Now there will be three fluffballs!

STELLA!~
We must find Stella a new home.  She is not liking the other 19 or so cats she lives with.  If anyone can offer their home, temporarily, I would be forever grateful.  I think even if it was just one other cat, it would be a good thing!  So please, spread the word far and wide.  Let's find Stella a new home!

I received a few pictures of little Peanut I thought I would share with you.

PEANUT!
Is that not adorable???

Well, its the end of a decade.  Onto a new year.  2020 - twenty years ago we couldn't fathom being in the 2000s let alone 2020.   I say GOOD RIDDANCE 2019.  My worst year ever!  Breaking ankle/leg, hip replacement, diabetes diagnosis (controlled by diet and exercise), stomach bug,  hitting a curb, getting stung by a bee, and the list goes on.  The only thing I didn't get this year was a cold.

Thanks to so many people for helping me this year.  I think back to when I started, and I had NO HELP.  I am so grateful to each and every one of you for everything and anything you contributed to help a cat.  Even if it was your time.  They have nothing else.  I hope I can count on you all this year as well.  As long as I can still walk, I will continue to help these forgotten cats of Rochester.

Happy New Year everyone!  Be safe!

Feed a Cat for Christmas! MARY and SCOTT!

SCOTT and MARYThank you for helping to Feed a Cat for Christmas, and beyond!  Scott and Mary are very dear to my heart.  Thank you for helping me to feed a cat for Christmas!  What can I say about these two...  they helped me establish a city garden years ago, they've built some beautiful shelters for me,   and to top that all off, they adopted Pip and Emmet from me back in 2017!  AND Mary's sister Liz adopted Syd and Joanie (now Piper)!  Did you know I am still feeding their mom on Seventh Street?  Thank you both so much.  I am forever grateful for your ongoing support.

PIP and EMMETT

It was a MISERABLE morning.  Pouring rain.  But I DID rescue Fancy Pants!  Fancy Pants is a mess.  He has many tangles in his thick fur, but will clean up nicely.  He is gone to the clinic for shots, testing and neutering if needed.  He was once someone's pet, but hasn't had a home in a very long time.  He is from Short Street.  I do have someone that will take him right in for adoption.  Thank you Shahin.

FANCY PANTS

And thank you to Joel for helping out today.  IT would have been REALLY miserable without him.  He dutifully did the feedings at most of the shelters that I can’t get to, still, because of my injuries this year.  Still having a hard time bending down, or getting on my knees.  It's getting UP that is the really hard part.  I was telling Joel, if only the shelter were a bit more raised, I would be able to do them.  I would love to have a day where everyone pitches in and helps to rebuild.  Someday…

I am embarrassed to say – Axel and Nipsy were adopted by this great girl Laurie, who THOUGHT she was getting two boys…  turns out, she has two girls!  And Annie, who I thought was a girl, is really a boy.  This has taught me a lesson.  Kittens need to go to a vet to be sexed.  Hopefully  there won’t be ANY kittens, but if there are, they go straight to the vet.  I feel terrible for Laurie although she said she has already bonded with them, so no worries.  She just has to rethink the names now!

STELLA

Stella, the momma cat to the above-named kittens, is restless and not very happy at the moment.  She is lashing out at the foster’s other cats and needs to be rehomed.  Please, spread the word.  I don’t know what else I can do with her.   She most likely needs to be in a home with no other cats, where she would thrive.  Please consider Stella.  She is very precious and sweet, she just needs to find a quiet home.

Weenie was adopted!  I delivered her to her new home yesterday morning.  What a great home it is.  Her new mom has named her NOX.  Love it.   Weenie is still a bit scared.

In the meantime, enjoy these pictures from the kitten deliveries of last week.

Feed a Cat for Christmas! JEN and TODD!!!

JEN and TODD!!! Thank you so much for your kind donation to help Feed A Cat for Christmas!  You fed many today!

Here is what Jen had to say, along with her donation (sent in 12/19):

"Feed a cat for Christmas! Hi Janine! Todd and I want to feed a cat for Christmas. I have been waiting to donate today because it was one year ago today I lost my special friend, Junior. He was 17 and spent 16 of those years by my side. He was my bossy little judger who supervised everything. I still miss him every day. I wasn't really ready to get a new cat but started looking. I thought if I found someone that REALLY needs a home, I could consider it. I looked at many cats and was going to stop looking and wait. Then I saw Chance's face and his story. This was the guy that really needed somewhere to call home. Forever. I know that we are at least his 3rd home, and I hope he likes it because he is stuck with us! He is still timid and shy and coming around, but just the sweetest guy. We call him Tobin Chance now (his gangster name is Tobin the Toe - mostly because of his funny toe). We just love him and are happy we could give him a home and a forever family. Merry Christmas! Jen and Todd"

I am so grateful to Jen and Todd for adopting a hard to adopt adult cat from the streets, and giving him the chance at love like he's never had before.  Thank you both for all your support since then too.  I am just so thankful for you both!

A special thanks to Joel for driving all the way into the city at 3 am. this morning to help feed the cats.  He was King's sidekick this morning while I was able to get an extra hour of sleep.  Thank you Joel!

New pictures of Garrett!  He is a GORG.

And now, off to my first day back at work!  At least its a Friday!  Woo hoo!!!

Have a great day!

Feed a Cat for Christmas! ANNIE V!

Thank you ANNIE!  For helping to feed a bunch of cats this morning, the day AFTER Christmas!  It was so foggy out there you could literally cut it with a knife.  I noticed all these minute particles under the light - exactly what is fog made of - its moisture, that is for sure, but you can't feel it like rain.  Its pretty cool!  But back to Annie.  A long time ago, I worked a part-time job collections with Annie, and many years later she had a son.  She brought him by the house to meet me, and to see the cats I had available.  I had just rescued a black and white kitten from Parsells Ave #1, and was looking for a home for it.  Lo and behold, Antonio fell madly in love with this kitten named Mitzy, and its been a love story ever since.

Here are pictures of Antonio and Mitzy, two of the cutest creatures I know.

SANTA, MITZY, ANTONIO
I am so thankful for my friendship with Annie, the sweetest girl I know.  Thank you for being you Annie!

We had our hopes up today for Rory and Lily, the two kittens getting older by the second.  They are in foster care with Sue, and have been there for a while.  A couple from Syracuse was supposed to come meet them and most likely adopt them today.  Instead, to their happiness, and sadness, they found another cat, and had to pass on the two.  Don't worry Lily and Rory, we WILL find you a home!

And don't worry GARRETT, MONTY, JONNY, STELLA, WEENIE, ELLIE, JOEY, and BUCK, we will find you all good homes soon!  And you want to know why?  Because we have OTHER KITTIES still on the street that are desperate to go into a safe and warm home for the winter.  So Please, Everyone, Please share far and wide with your friends and family.  ADOPT!  FOSTER!

Have a great day!

Feed a Cat For Christmas! LESLIE C.!

Thank you LESLIE - and her husband Bruce!  For helping to Feed a Cat for Christmas, literally!  I fed well over 100 cats this morning, and gave each a little extra portion of the precious wet food that they love more than anything else in the world.  Thank you to all of you for your donations in the past of the LARGE Friskies canned pate or shredded.  It means the world to me when preparing the next day's meal as I don't have to open as many cans, nor rinse as many out.  I go through 12 large cans plus six regular sized each day.  Wow, that's a lot.

Leslie adopted Brady from me recently.  She was a friend of my foster mom Gaye, and I am so glad that Leslie checked out his picture on Facebook and said, that is the cat for me!  She gave this sweet adult boy from the street a chance, and is in total love now.  Thank you for your kindness and generosity Leslie!

My day did not start out great.  Well, it started at 3:15, as you all know, heading out to the inner city to feed cats.  After that, went to sister's at 8 to watch the kids open their gifts.  Heading home to relax a bit before going to Mom's, I wasn't paying attention, and hit a curb, destroying my tire.  It had to be one of the stupidest things I've done in my life, and I am hanging my head in shame today.  Car had to be towed, no spare tire.  I had to wait for AAA to arrive, and rushed home to get things done.  So I am down a car, and most likely over $100 for a new tire.  I've learned a lesson.  Pay more attention!  Stop daydreaming as you drive!

At least I didnt' hit a person or animal.  That's the consolation from the cute tow truck driver.  Working on XMas.

That's it for now.  Tomorrow is a new day.

The kittens surprise was a GREAT surprise for the little girl who's parents adopted both Peaches and Butters.  She sent me a short clip but I dont' know how to share.  I'll figure it out and pass it on.

In the meantime, have yourself a merry little Christmas!

FEED A CAT FOR CHRISTMAS!!! June and Gary!!!

Thank you June and Gary!  Thank you for helping to feed many kitties today for XMas eve!  It was a wonderfully mild morning again and I am thankful.  June and Gary have been staunch supporters to me and my efforts to help the animals in this city.  They even adopted a kitten named NOODLES!  I rescued Noodles from Niagara Street, when I was feeding the cats behind the fence at the apartments across from where I am feeding the same adult cats now.  Remember that big bad man?  Thank you June and Gary for your ongoing support and faith in my quest to help these animals.

CONNOR!
My Most Expensive Rescue EVER!
(now living the good life!)

Regarding the anonymous comment made about removing the comment that someone had made a few days ago about possible carbon monoxide poisoning, I removed that comment simply because it wasn't true and I didn't want people to think it was.  If it was true, I would have a lot of dead cats on my hands.   And to that point, I have a carbon monoxide detector that actually works.  So thanks for your astute observation and obvious need to point it out, but it's not even a consideration in the cause of death.

But speaking of life!  After yesterday's last delivery of this batch of kittens - Noelle to her new home, and Peaches and Butters to their new home, I can breathe a sigh of relief.  They all went to great homes.  Here are some pictures to prove it!  Pickles and Peanut were delivered the day before.

BE SURE TO CLICK ON PICS to see up close!

Don't forget all the precious animals still on the streets, and in foster care waiting for their forever home.  Please consider adoption.  You will never know true joy until you have one of these grateful creatures look into your eyes, and cuddle up beside you.

Have a Fabulous day!

Feed a Cat for Christmas! Carol O!

CAROL!  I miss my Carol!!!  Thank you for helping to feed a cat today.  Many cats to be exact.  Like over 100!  Carol has been in my life for a long time now, having adopted FOUR cats from me, over the years.  The first one from Hayward Avenue when I used to have a shelter there on the side of some pervert's house.  Anyone remember him?  The slumlord that rented the house out and wanted a little on the side from me in order to keep the shelters on the side of his rented house.  JERK.

Anyways, Carol has been an awesome supporter to me, even though she wont' read this post because she says my blog saddens her, which saddens me, because its not ALL doom and gloom, is it?  But its reality, and there are SO many wonderful stories that I post.  If I had to read my blog, I would do it because its mixed with different things.  I can't watch the animal channels because of 'nature', or the commercials showing animal neglect, but I can read my blog!

Thank you so much Carol for helping the cats.  We so appreciate you!

It was a mild morning out.  I love mornings like this, but I know it wont' last.  But we can hope.  I have the day off today, and have already delivered three kittens and its only 1 pm.  I went to Penfield, to Perinton/Fairport to Irondequoit to Pittsford.  That's a lot of time.  But its worth it.  I will miss Noelle, Peaches and Butters.  All went to GREAT homes!  I can't wait for updates!

I also have run out of time. I have to make three dishes for Christmas Dinner, and run to my 92 year old friend Miss Lillian to sit with her for a few.  I still have a gazillion thank you cards to write.

Lets not forget we need to get our Monty, Stella, Jonny, Garrett, Ellie, Weenie, Buck, Tommy, Marbles and Smudge all adopted! Spread the word!  Visit my website and adoptapet and see their pics.  I've run out of time!  But back tomorrow!

I could use an assistant.  Anyone?

Have a great day!

Feed a Cat For Christmas! Debbie S!

Debbie!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Thank you so much for helping me to feed a cat for Christmas!  You have fed 100 cats today.  Yup.  That many.  And more actually, for the ones I pulled over to place a dish out for.  And a towel under it, of course, so their little feet wouldn't hurt while they are standing there eating it.

BUTTERS Ready to Pounce!
She is going to new home tomorrow with her sister Peaches!
Debbie has been a good friend for a few years now.  She is friends with a friend Julie, and became mine as well.  She makes some pretty awesome gift baskets, the last one made was the last Meow and Chow, which was too long ago.  I promise, this coming year, we are having one!  Debbie has the luxury of spending her winters in Florida.  Someday Debbie!!!  Here I come!

It was a mild morning today out there.  I fed a lot of cats, and felt good doing it.   I thought about what I was doing for a moment.  I've been doing this for HOW MANY YEARS NOW???  And what do I have to show for it?  I never have a day off, I never take vacations, I can't afford to nor can the cats afford to go a day without food, and my house is the same little starter house I moved into how many years ago...  I have not had the luxury of putting much updating into it, except my kitchen, which I love, and still have to cover things up that I am embarrassed of when someone comes over (i.e., my carpeted stairway).  All because of cats!  My life is not what I hoped it would be, but I accept it, day after day, and am comforted by the fact that I have saved a lot of cats, if that is really any consolation...  I do get down about this now and then.  Don't get me wrong, I do love cats, its just that I think...  nothing has changed, there are still as many out on the streets as there were when I began this, I've just helped curb a few thousand from being born.  The City of Rochester still has done NOTHING to change the situation for these poor suffering animals that have no say in the matter whatsoever. The City has done nothing to help except to turn a cheek to a few measly shelters on their vacant lots.  I won't go there.

And then there are people.  Kind people.  Oh so many kind people.  One of them is Jennifer, who adopted half-dead Chase from me.  She has been a strong supporter for me and recently wrote me the following note:

Hi Janine. I have had a really long week. I just wanted today to be done and on vacation for Christmas. I got in the car today at 6:50 (running late of course), and stopped sat my garage to listen to the radio for a few minutes because I heard this. I am SO HAPPY. I listen to warm 101.3 in December because I like the Christmas music. Every day, Tony does a story about a regular person that does something great. YOU WERE TODAY’S PERSON!!! I don’t know if you heard it, but I am hoping other Janine fans were listening. I am not a facebook-er so I am not sure if it is there. If I find it, I will have Todd share it.

I was driving into work earlier this week listening to another story, and I thought why can’t Janine be that story? I wrote Tony on Tuesday and he read your story today. You know what else??!! Not only were you recognized, we got Aadya’s story told. Below is the email I sent. Todd did not know I sent the email, but when I told him what happened, he called Tony. He said that Tony has also sent you an audio recording of the story. He thinks you are as amazing too.

Merry Christmas, Janine.
Keep being great.

Jen and Todd (and of course, little Tobin Chance).

Hi Tony,

I wanted to reach out to you about my everyday hero. Her name is Janine Wagner and she is amazing. She runs Janine the Bean rescue, but it is not an ordinary rescue. She actually feeds about 100 feral/stray/abandoned homeless cats every single day in the city, and has been doing this for nearly 20 years. Whether it is a clear night, pouring rain, a blizzard, Christmas, or her birthday, she is out there at 3:30 every morning for 2 hours (sometimes longer) to check on the cats, then goes off to her full time job. The care from Janine is the only care most of these animals get, and the only time that they eat. She has tended to a number of these cats many years. Some days those stories end in heartbreak, but she goes back out to help the next day.

In some areas, she has permission to place shelters to provide some comfort for the cats and protection from the elements. At times, people destroy their homes, which she turns around and rebuilds. Not all of the cats have the luxury of a shelter. Some are fed under a tree, a couple even eat under a city mailbox. She TNRs (trap, neuter, release) the feral cats to help keep the population down, and treats those that are sick. When she finds socialized cats in need of a home or a litter of feral kittens (often born in her shelters), she will take them under her wing to get them adopted and off the street to break the cycle. This year alone she has rescued over 110 cats. She takes responsibility to get them vetted; if they are sick, she makes sure they are better before they go to their forever home.

She has a few fosters and her supporters help with donations, but much of her work is funded out of her own pocket. The easy part is for us to support her, it is a completely different level of commitment to go out there on a daily basis to care for these cats that have nothing else. She also encounters homeless people and has stopped to help them and leave them gloves or a blanket. Recently, a homeless couple reached out to Janine (they borrowed someone’s phone) after her after they had found a kitten in need of help. She had been beaten and left in a dumpster with her legs zip-tied together. Janine was out of the house in a flash and got the kitten the attention that it needed. The kitten was later adopted by the veterinarian that helped to save her life. Unfortunately, she was never able to locate the couple that found the kitten, much to the disappointment of Janine, her family, and her supporters. This is just one example in the very long line of cats that needed her. She found my cat on the street, emaciated, weighing only 6 pounds, with a severe infection. Others are left behind when people leave their homes, are no longer wanted, others abandoned in a barn. One kitten was left outside in a dog crate with no food or water. She has even helped cats that were left behind for simply no longer being a kitten.

Nothing stops her. Nothing gets in her way, and she continues caring for “nobody’s cats” every day. As Janine says, changing the life of one cat won’t change the world, but it will change the world for that one cat.

It would be the greatest gift to recognize Janine for everything she does and give something back to her since she gives so much of herself.

Thank you,
Jen

Thank you Jen, that meant so much to me.  I cried.  Its so kind.  But please know, there are so many heroes inour city, across the country and around the world that  do what I do, but thank you for recognizing me, little old me.  Thank you.

The next morning, Tony read Jen's letter on the air.  And I think one person heard it.  Jake from my office called to tell me.  Oh, and Jennifer and her husband.  But I have it on tape, thank you!  :)

(Something went wrong with this post, I hate my computer -- it does strange things.  I could not post pictures and its typing over my words.  I keep having to retype if I want to go back and edit something).  UGH.

Have a great day!

Feed A Cat for Christmas! Kimberly!!!

Thank you KIMBERLY for helping to Feed a Cat for Christmas!  I should be paying Kim for being hospitalized after being given a 'love bite' by her latest foster Jonny, who I rescued from Bay Street a few weeks ago.  It wasn't meant to be vicious, he just didn't know how to behave at first rescue.  BRAT.  But as sweet as this girl is, she gave up her own money to help feed the others out there!  Thank you KIM!!!

JONNY

Kim became one of my first fosters (I only have FIVE!) a few years ago when we took in an adult kitty.  From that point on, she took in...  four adult kitties for me?  Each one finding their forever home, and then Kim would make room for another.  Mind you, its no easy task to take a cat from the street and get it to learn to adapt to being in a home.  Believe me, the last thing on their minds is to go back outside.  And once they taste the comfort of a home, they are very thankful to their rescuer and foster parent.  And more thankful to their adopter.  Jonny was her last foster, but not her least.  She will be ready to foster again when her hand heals completely.  As you know, cat bites are NOT fun! Kim was hospitalized!

There is a silver lining though.  Along came Janessa, who said 'I'm NOT afraid!  He better not bite ME, or I'll bite him back!'  or something along those lines....

Janessa, who has fostered for me many times before, and has had great success with the adult cats.  They are all adopted!  Janessa's latest report:

"Good evening! So, Jonny was out of the room for a bit tonight. He avoided me for a few minutes and then started checking in with me and letting me pet him. Both dogs were outside, so he relaxed pretty quickly. He just stayed upstairs. My two not so friendly kitties sat at the top of the stairs glaring, but they didn't start anything and Jonny just ignored them. lol. Ru, Pikuls, and Shorty, who have all been interacting with him under the door and have been in the room with him (just one on one so far) all hung out with him and then tried to gobble all his food. Little pigs.
Jonny is VERY good about other cats butting in to his food when he's eating. It surprised me how chill he is about that!
I've started kissing him on the head. I just couldn't help it anymore. He's such a sweetheart ❤

I'm probably only going to let him out a short period of time for the next few times. I still don't want him getting overwhelmed.

He really is doing great tho! I love him ❤"

I am so grateful for my fosters.  Thank you so much for helping to save a life.

Have a great day!

FEED a Cat for Christmas!! MARY ELLEN F!

Thank you Mary Ellen F. for helping to Feed a Cat for Christmas!  Your gift has fed some very hungry souls out there this morning.  Mary Ellen has been a faithful supporter, and neighbor (sort of!) for a long time now, and is always there when an animal is in great need of care.  Mary Ellen has a fur family of her own, but she always looks to help others.  Thank you, MF!

Let's get Sir Montgomery (Monty) adopted!  Here he is all cozy and mischievous in his foster mom Gaye's home, but this can't live forever. If you are looking for a very sweet male gorgeous grey cat, then this boy is for you.  (Click on pic to see closer!)

It was a very cold morning out there.  I was thinking about the morals of a person that would want a cat to suffer even more than it already is, especially on a morning like today.  It was 9 degrees out, but with the wind chill, it was below zero.  If the board wasn’t placed after that POS left, the storm we had after I left yesterday morning the food would have been covered, and the ground around it with snow.  As it turns out, there was no food in the bowl when I got there this morning, so before filling, I put a towel down on the ground and added a cardboard board made by June and Gary, with a wooden one against it to hold it in place due to high winds.  I wanted their little feet to be comfortable while they ate their breakfast.  Back to this person.  What an evil man.  How does he treat other animals?  How does he treat children?

I finally found some straw.  I was gifted with some nice large Styrofoam boxes recently (Susan and Bart), and someone made some very nice tote shelters as well (Kim and Sheryl), and another someone took the Styrofoam boxes and spray painted and covered in a thin plastic to keep moisture out (Jen and Todd).  Thank you all!  After cutting a hole in each, they will be filled with the straw I found at Michaels today ($5 a bundle), and then placed tomorrow for more cats to find comfort in.  I am trying to place as many as I can.  Most spots don’t have enough shelter as there are cats.  It's pretty sad, especially on a cold day as this.

Tomorrow I have the day off, but am hoping to write a post to thank the next Feed a Cat For Christmas donor!   Although starting at 9 am., I will be picking up kittens, and delivering kittens!  ALL MORNING (and into the afternoon) LONG!   OH JOY!

Have a great day!

The Board Bandit

Short and sweet.  I was not feeling good  yesterday.  I stayed home from work.  Its hard handling four little kittens when you are sick.  But back to work, I go today, even though I still don’t feel good.  Where is that winning ticket?

And it's hard too when you have all these people adopting the kittens and you promised delivery around Christmas or weekend before, which is this one coming, and you have to figure out delivery dates, times, locations…   Not to mention, these kittens were rescued from a barn, the remaining ones… Peaches, Butters, Pickles, and Peanut, all have these little issues going on…  diarrhea, lethargy – they don’t seem to play much.  Although Butters does, and so does Pickles and Peanut, but not what I would think for kittens.  Are my cat toys not fun enough for them?  I’ve called in a prescription for diarrhea but wondering how I can get them more active.  We’ve pretty much ruled out any ailments they might have at the vet on Saturday.  They all had thorough physical exams.  It also occurred to me that these kittens are actually a week younger than I thought.  So that should bring them to 8 weeks old on Christmas Day.

Well, in other exciting news…  I CAUGHT the bastard stealing my board!!!  He was just getting back into his car when I pulled up like gunfire – I tried to block him in after rolling down my passenger window and pointed to him and said ‘did you just take that board??”  he wouldn’t roll his window down and found a way to get out of the spot and drive.  So guess what I did, I put on my high beams and followed him, all the way until he got onto the expressway at which point I turned around.  I was not going to go on a wild goose chase but I at least had his license plate number.  This time he was NOT driving the yellow Humvee, but a dark-colored BMW Plate #GYY 5659.  What a coward.  I have a friend that thought – hey let's smear dog feces on the edges of the board!  So she brought her dog’s stuff to Niagara, and smeared the board he took.  I hope he has it all over his hands.  I don’t know what I can do.  I am not getting any help from the police.  This is insane.  How can someone get away with this?  Can anyone help me with this???

Short and sweet (or not so sweet) – but remember all the kitties we have to adopt out!

FEED A CAT FOR CHRISTMAS!!! HOLLY and RORY!

Sunday Morning Breakfast

Thank you Holly and Rory for feeding a cat for Christmas!  Holly and Rory are adopting Peaches!  She will be a surprise for their eight year old daughter.  Christmas morning.  I wish I could be a fly on the wall.  I met this nice couple yesterday, who came by to visit Peaches, after knowing about what happened to her.  They needed good news, and a kitten cuddle.  Holly's dad passed away the night before.  Heart-breaking.   Life is so fragile.  I am blessed for each day that passes, that I still have my mom.  I won't know what to do without her.   Thank you Holly and Rory for helping me to feed all the hungry cats this morning.  There were so many, and so many needing homes right now.

BUSTER 💔

First and foremost, today I say goodbye to my sweet angel Buster.  Buster came from Grand Avenue way back when.  Miss B. was evicted from her house and left her cats behind.  Buster and Midnight were both taken in by me, and Buster was adopted by Wally, Miss B’s former neighbor and friend who lived on Grand. Wally had too many people coming in and out the door, and so was Buster, in and out.  I put the kibosh on that and took her back home.  She was a very independent cat, tolerant of no others.  She loved to eat, and sleep.  That was it.  Buster began to lose weight months ago, and today, she is a skeleton.  I had the appointment scheduled for her, but she ate something I mixed up for her and used the scratching post, so I canceled the appointment.  She was still eating!  But after this weekend, its time.  She can barely stand on her little feet.  God, I am going to miss you Buster.

It was a tough weekend all around.  The five kittens I am caring for are now four kittens.  Friday morning, I woke at my usual 2:45 am. to go out and feed the cats in the Beechwood section of Rochester, which is what I have done every single day for 20 years now.  I could hear the kittens crying for their food from the playpen in the living room that they were placed in each night to keep them together and safe.  I got their food ready, brought it in and set it down.  There were four kittens gathering around the plate.  I looked over and saw Peaches soundly sleeping, or was she.  I immediately picked her up and her body was lifeless. But she was still alive, faintly crying.  I drove 80 miles an hour to the vet, all the while talking to her and touching her little body.  I ran her in, the workers there took her back, and I was a hot mess.  The doctor came in and said that she stopped breathing but still had a heart rate.  They were injecting her with whatever it is, trying to get her sugar level up, which was deathly low.   The doctor said, she probably wouldn’t make it.  I sat there, thinking about this precious little life, and how would I tell the adopter, who I wrote an email to ask her to call me.   In what seemed like an eternity, I heard the faint sound of a kitten cry.  I thought, hmmm… maybe they have other animals they are treating.  Sure enough, the doctor came in and said ‘she’s fine.’  ‘She is up, alert, and eating food.’  To me, a miracle had just happened.  I was never so grateful to this doctor, and her techs, that were surrounding Peaches – the doctor asked if I would like to come back to see her.  WE don’t know what happened, but I was instructed to feed her every few hours – maybe she wasn’t getting enough food during mealtime, maybe her siblings were eating her portion of the food.  I was leaving kibble freely for them during the day, but not giving them wet kitten food.  She was very thin.  I brought her home and prayed she would be OK.  I was almost afraid to go to sleep that night.

Pickles and Peaches resting on George!

The next morning, at 2:45 am., the same thing, I could hear the hunger cries, but this time, it was Pepper laying there lifeless in the crib.  I raced, once again, on the deserted dark highway to the emergency clinic in Brighton.  Sobbing my eyes out, thinking, how can this happen again???  She was making little cries the entire way there, so I thought the same thing, a miracle would happen again.  They just have to give her glucose.  I even said this as I handed his little body over to them when I arrived.  The doctor came in later and said that he was not breathing on his own, they had him on a respirator.  They said that there was surely major neurological damage, and he wouldn’t make it. We decided best thing to remove the respirator and let him pass.  I was devastated.  How could this happen?  I was advised to take the remaining four to a regular vet to have them all examined and have their vitals checked.  I made the appointment that day, at Cats and Critters.  What wonderful people there.  The doctor and vet tech took their time with each kitten and checked them thoroughly.  No sign of pan leuk, no symptoms for anything.  Peanut and Peaches were given fluids, and they were sent home with instructions to fatten them up – KMR added to their wet food which should be given every few hours.  This was Saturday.  Saturday night I woke every few hours to check on them.  They were alive!  They were alive this morning!  And thriving!  I have no idea what happened, but I shall feed them until they burst.  This morning they were running around like little hellions.

PEPPER (Rest in Peace little one)
I delivered MARTEN to a new home on Friday, and Saturday morning I delivered Jax and Squeaky to their new home.  I will be going back to see Snowflake this weekend, as I was none too pleased about the condition of the house, nor the lack of basic kitten food.  I could tell I was going to break her heart if I left there with the kitten.  I wanted to give her a chance.  I wound up driving her to the store to get kitten food.  I will be making changes to my rules for adoption – you must have a clean house, and you must have everything set up before I arrive with the kitten.  That’s pretty simple.  I told the woman that this was a trial period and I would be back.  I am not happy.  Jax and Squeaky went to a beautiful home, and I am very pleased.

There is so much more, but I must be off to work.

Have a great day!
