TNR Monday!

Sammy a/k/a CHESTER!

Oh, the joys of rescue.  NOT.  A LOT.  A weekend full of ups and downs.  On Friday, I met Foster Janessa, foster for Sammy, at his potential adopters home, to see how well the initial meet and greet would go.  Janessa lives about an hour away, so she was gracious enough to make the drive to the adopter’s house.  We were going to leave Sammy there and see how it went.  By the time we left, they were ready to sign on the dotted line!  Cats don’t ‘show’ like dogs.  They can be quite nervous with someone new.  They are not themselves most times so I prefer to bring the animal to the person’s home, and see how it plays out that way.  My instincts proved right and all went well!  Thank you Janessa, again, for another successful adoption due to her offering to take in a cat from the street.

MUFFIN
That evening, we were to meet a potential adopter for Muffin!  We met at Foster Melissa’s house, and it all seemed to go very well.  Of course Muffin was scared, but not scared enough that when he ran, he just ran to the tree tower and stuck his head out of the little ‘cave’.  The next morning, we received a note stating that Muffin may not be the one.    Very disappointing, to say the least. But, the right one will come along!

JAC

On Saturday, someone was supposed to come along to meet Jac at her Foster Judie’s house.  A few hours before, she was sent an email stating that the person had found a FREE kitten and she wouldn’t be coming.  Another huge disappointment, but one more try, this time at Foster Sue’s house, for Eli.  This time, it was a NO SHOW.

DONALD
But the good news is that Donald was delivered and adopted by the same woman that adopted Davey and Charlie!  Remember Uncle Charlie?  Nothing but good reports on all!

The rotten news is that the slimeball is still doing this thing on Niagara.  Taking the food bowls, or throwing the food out sometime after I leave.  I am still waiting on a legal resolution, and hoping someone would be able to spy on this spot some morning!

TNR - Greeley and Parsells
On Greeley off Parsells, I feed behind a store.  There is a muted tortie that was pregnant early spring, but we were never able to get her in time.  So I set a trap today after not seeing her for a good long time, and I got another cat instead.  I suspect this one is a boy, and at least we will get him neutered, deflead and dewormed before we have to put him back on the street.  Oh well, I will keep trying!  There are SO many out there.

PARKER
Finally, here is a new picture of Parker, the kitten I rescued last week.  What fun this was, to see him go from scared, swatty and bitey, to just wanting to be held, loved and a purr machine.  This must be how, whoever had him, treated him.  Mean.  He is available for adoption!

Have a great day!

Another Rescue!

This little baby was wandering the street at 3:45 am. this morning.   Melville Street.  I couldn't just leave it.  It was crying and crying.  I picked it up and off it went with me.

What kind of 'responsible' people would leave a kitten out?

And the bastard that keeps taking the doors/boards we are leaving at Niagara to protect the cats food there is at it again.  I just don't know what to do.  I wish someone would sit there for me and watch but I know that is a lot to ask.

Update from Lex (Simba) and Eloise (Nala):

"Nala stood nose to nose with Junior (their dog) yesterday.  They are no longer afraid.  And half the time Junior just sits watching them as if he were an old man!"

Love!

This is my post for Friday as I am off and running for the day.

SARA
Sara needs a forever home. 🏠 She is such a loving cat. 🐈 She was rescued about a year old, pregnant and underweight. Of her 6 kittens only two were born alive and one of those so tiny it only survived a day. To her remaining kitten she was the most attentive mom. But her " mother of the year" nomination 🏆 would come from the fact that she extended her nursing and mothering duties to all the other kittens in foster... the 2 week old orphan found on a bike path to the older kittens rescued from barns and the streets of Rochester. While those kittens are now 2 to 3 months old and some almost her size, she continues to allow them to nurse and cuddle. She has been spayed and is up to date on shots. Still producing milk because the kittens continue to stimulate her glands.
Sara also enjoys her adult time, upstairs with the resident cats and dogs. 😻🐕🐱🐈🐶🐈 She gets along with all. She has no fear of strangers. She likes to play with furry catnip mice. 🐁 She likes to be held or carried and purrs like a motor. She can also be content to just lounge by herself on the cat tower. Her name is Egyptian for "princess" which fits perfectly with her exotic markings.
This MOTHER OF THE YEAR deserves a forever home. Is that home yours? Please apply to adopt SARA at www.Janinethebeanrescue.org

Have a great day!

Tuesday Blues...

Not much to report today.  It started to rain about 10 minutes into the run.  I dreaded the stops I had to make where I am just feeding cats under a tree, or by the side of the road.  I knew their food would be soaked, and so would they depending on how hungry they were.  It wasn't too bad, but bad enough.

And on Niagara Street, someone (gee, I wonder if it was the yellow humvee guy) took a shelter, and trashed a second one.  It upsets me so much each time I find something like this.  It really hurts the cats, and they have nothing to cuddle into on a fall day like today.  Its so mean.  I just can't understand how people can do this to animals.

Thank you to Steve, who made a beautiful wooden shelter for me, and came out at 5 am. to help place it.  Steve, its beautiful, and I am sure it will be a safe retreat for a cat or two.  Thank you so much Steve and his sweet wife Julie. xo

On a brighter note, here is an updated picture of Muffin.  He has had some interest by several people, but he must go to a quiet home with no dogs or kids, according to his foster mom Melissa.  And it HAS to be someone that will never ever leave him again.  He is really flourishing since his last ordeal, and deserved the BEST home possible.

Have a great day.

Monday's News!

Thank you Joel, for asking.  I am recovering from that stupid fall last Monday, that actually cost me $50 to be told it was a bruised rotator cuff.  Not torn, just bruised.  Every day it got a little bit better since then, and its almost perfect now, minus the shot of cortisone I need every other month in every joint on my body, including the shoulder!

Thank you Jennifer, Chance’s (Tobin Chance is his name now) mom, for always trying to help my cause.  You are right, if every ‘friend’ out there would donate one dollar a month, if they were Facebook friends, I would have over $1000 a month to care for cats!  But it ‘ain’t happening.  It seems the very few donations I get from people occasionally are people that are not even on Facebook.  When I thank them, I ask how they know of me, and many say they remember me from being in the newspaper.

And please remember, Paula Kolb is collecting bottles to help with the cat food costs.  Please reach out to me if you would like to help in that respect.  And Carol from Mileage Master is collecting cans that help cover the cost of caring for the cat she has at her shop that she offered to foster a long time ago, who were never adopted.  Parsley and Hermie, Jule, and Larry.

I delivered three more kittens this weekend.  All three of Fluffy’s kittens.  Thanks to Estelle for doing such a fabulous job with them.  And thanks to Fluffy for being such a good mommy kitty.  So Tallulah joined Petunia, now named Summer.  Petunia was the black cat that was barefoot and pregnant from First Street.  She had six kittens, and all went to great homes. Petunia is now as happy as can be with her new mom and dad, but they wanted to get her a companion, and we are all hoping that Tallulah is the one.  Petunia has not been as accepting as we hoped, but its only been two days.  We shall see.

Eloise and Lex went to a home where they join a large canine brother, and a sweet human brother named Joe.  I had to go over the next day and clip their razor sharp nails.  Lex is still a bit hissy with the dog, but he’ll get there.  I already have pics to share.   Their new names?  Simba (Lex) and Nala (Eloise).

Roscoe and Finn, two of Goldi’s babies went to a good home.  Kristin delivered, along with the others she fostered, so I don’t have firsthand knowledge of the who they joined – canine or human – but I trust that she is comfortable with all their new homes.

Saturday morning when Sheryl and I pulled up to 7th Street, the shelters, which I always referred to as ‘the apartment complex’ were trashed.  Sheryl put it all back together, while I sat in the truck, because I still can’t push or pull, or lift heavy weights.  IT was pretty upsetting, but we had to keep moving because we were meeting  Steve, who built me a little hut, and was going to be there at 5 am.  Sunday morning rolled around, and same thing.  So Kings and I got out and had to put the shelters all back again.  Him with his bad back.  So Sunday, I went back there three times to see if I could catch someone.  The last trip, I saw a woman next door sitting on her porch.  I got out, introduced myself, and had a discussion about the lot, what I do, and that someone was messing with it.  I questioned her, and she seemed to show some sympathy, and said she would keep an eye out, as I handed her my card.  Her name is Maria.  As I started to drive off I saw a young girl walking and I pulled over and asked her if she knew who played in that lot.  I also told her that whoever was doing this would be in trouble with the police.  She pointed to the red house a few doors down and said those kids are bad.  So, at least I know who the next people I speak to about this the next time it happens.  IF it was them.  That is three places I am having trouble with.  Parsells #1, Niagara Street, and now 7th.  It is VERY disheartening when I drive off after finishing up.  It used to be a satisfying feeling, knowing I fed so many hungry cats, and that they had good shelters to go to when it stormed, and now its sad.   There are at least three locations where I am feeding cats under trees, or by a fire hydrant.  And I don’t know what I will do when its pouring, or starts to snow.

Other than that, fingers crossed for more kitty adoptions this week, so that we can save more!

Have a great day!

Number Crunching

95 – That’s how many cats/kittens I’ve had in my foster since January of this year
40-50+ - That’s how many TNR’s I’ve done this year (trap, neuter, return to street)
11 - That’s how many kittens we have in foster that need homes
4 - That’s how many adults we have in foster that need homes.
20+ - That’s how many locations I stop at each morning
1.45hrs. – That’s how long it takes me on a good day (spring/summer/fall) to feed, from start to finish
100+ - That’s how many cats I feed on the streets every morning
$150 - That’s how much I spend on food every week for the hungry cats
45+ lbs. - That’s how much dry food I dole out every day
36+  - That’s how many cans of wet food I go through every day

Mind blowing, isn’t it.  I don’t know how I manage, but I do, and with very little left over for fun.

I am very appreciative of those few that occasionally stop by and drop off food.  I am not getting much in the way of deliveries any more.  And there is not a lot going to the Food Cupboard that our friend Carol, at Mileage Master on Browncroft Boulevard near Creek/Blossom, started, to help out another girl that is feeding stray and feral cats in the city also.

I don’t know how long this can go on, but I will continue as long as I am able.

We must get these cats and kittens adopted, so that I can rescue more.  There are so many precious ones out there that run to me for food, and a pat on the head.  I’ve seen two kittens out there – baby kittens.  I just don’t have the time to trap, and I am running out of money to spay and neuter.  My bills at the vets are mounting.

So please continue to spread the word!  We can do this together if we can all pitch in!

The slimeball took the door yesterday that I had as a replacement for the board he took prior to that, on Niagara Street.  The police are aware, and the dirtbag can be charged with criminal mischief if he is caught, but he comes during the day when I am not around.  He dumps the food, and takes the wood that is placed there.  I wish I could have someone sit and stake the scene out.  Is there anyone that is retired and can do this?

And Again!

Well, yesterday morning I fell.  If anyone knows me, pre-hip stuff, and pre-broken ankle, I love to wear heels.  I love to wear dresses, and suits, and heels.  But I couldn't when my hip was killing me for seven months or so, and then I broke my ankle.  And then I had hip surgery.  So yesterday, I put on a pretty dress, and said, 'I don't want to wear flats AGAIN!' - so I will put on these high wedge shoes, show off my pretty pink toenail polish, and go to work. Well, I stepped outside the door, walked down the two steps, and onto the walkway to my car, and over I go.  I landed good, half grass, half walkway, and when I got up, ok, nothing broken.  But my arm.  It was KILLING me.  But I took the shoes off, put on my flats and went to work.  But my arm.  Ugh.  By 3 pm, I had to leave to get either heat or cold on it.  I did both, and by 10 pm., I was into the pain meds.

I can't move my arm up or down, or pull or push.  Its either my shoulder, or upper arm somewhere.  Its very tender to the touch just outside and below my shoulder, on my upper arm where the muscles are.  Good Gravy, not another injury.  I forgot to mention the bee sting a week ago.  Everything is happening!  :(

And now for a few updates:

Monty aka Montgomery
Monty - Monty is the kitty I rescued last week from Melville Street. His foster Mom Gaye has this to say today:

Monty report -- All continues to be fine. Absolutely no problems with this cat. He's not fond at all of being picked up but will give up quickly. I continue to be right in my original assessment that this is not a lap cat. He is perfectly fine as long as you are holding him on your lap, petting him, but, once you quit, he is off and about his business. On the other hand, he starts purring the minute he sees you and doesn't stop except when he is eating and I think that is only because he can't eat and purr at the same time. He comes when you call him, every time. I have been letting him explore the upstairs the past couple of days. He's bold enough to go off on his own and incredibly cute in that he comes back regularly to make sure you are still there. He is polite, not pushy. I can mix his food with him standing right there waiting patiently. Still very vocal. This is a cat that I think people are going to have to meet in order to fully appreciate.

Stevie aka Captain
Stevie - Mom Ashley says this about 'Captain' :  I'm impressed he's sleeping - he's a nosy Nancy so if anyone's up in the house so is he!"

And Muffin, as thin as he was when he came to Foster Mom Melissa, has still got it in him.  Here he is, playing for the first time in many weeks!

If anyone has an update they would like to share, I would love to hear from you!

Anyone?

Have a great day!

Something Wicked Comes This Way

It was not the best of weekends.

I did, however, bring two of Fluffy's babies to their new home.  Dozer and Milo.  The new adopter, Sheryl, and her daughter Grace, are contemplating new names.  Nothing new, nearly everyone wants to personalize their new member of the family with a name they choose.  I would too.  So its never insulting to me.

Muffin is doing well in his foster home with Melissa.  I am so thankful to her for asking for him back, as she was his first foster before he was adopted to one family, where they gave him up after a month because he wouldn’t come out of hiding, to his new family that adopted him right after that, had gotten so that he trusted them, and became a wonderful part of their family, and then they had a circumstance come up where they needed to return him.  We all know the story to that.  He wound up with another foster where Muffin immediately proceeded to the basement only to hide in the rafters.  Once trapped from there after a week, he was placed in a room and managed to move the floor grate to the HVAC unit and hid in there for a week.  Once finally trapped, we moved him to his old haunt, Melissa’s house.  She shared this picture with me yesterday.  He seems to be doing fine.  He really is a cuddle muffin and will make someone very happy when he is finally adopted!

I continue to get great reports from Foster Mom Janessa with Sammy.  Sammy seems to be fine with her cats and dogs, not overly thrilled, but tolerant!  She shared this picture with me. He can’t wait to find a permanent home!

Parsells #1 -  the tenant there is now throwing away the food and plates I leave, and even took the board there this morning.  There is NO WHERE to feed the seven or so cats here, and I am going to have trouble soon.  I know this sounds familiar, as I am having the same issues at Niagara Street. As I said, we are working on this, but its hard to catch this guy as he comes at times after I have left.  So its not like the police can sit there and watch.  I wish they could, but I know they won’t.

Its just so hard.  Why does it have to be so difficult?  Its actually draining.  To find the board missing this morning, my last stop before going home, was just so disheartening.  Winter is coming.  Its no joke.  Those cats will freeze and starve to death.

Sorry for the bad news. We’ll figure out something.

Have a great day!
