Happy Halloween!

I'm all over the place lately.  Here is post from Tuesday that I forgot to include.

Tuesday TNR

Parsells #3.  Still trying to catch the tortie that keeps having babies there!    Instead I got this poor baby on Tuesday morning.  Will try again Thursday.  Most are fixed at this location, but she is not, and obviously, neither was this guy.  Might be  baby daddy?  I had to let him go once he sat on my porch that afternoon after surgery, to sober up.  Its the worst feeling in the world to let an animal back to the streets.

TODAY - HALLOWEEN!

Today, I got this precious kitty.  He's been hanging around Grand and Stout Street forever.  I am hoping to get the little kitten the next time.  He was a talkative kitty the whole ride this morning, and it was not a sweet meowing, it was more angry meow... like probably swearing in kitty talk - saying "get me the #$%#$ out of this contraption!"  As I said to him, you don't know how lucky you are today, but hopefully he will realize it soon after he is vetted today.  He will go straight to Gaye's house after for her to foster.

Her last foster, Montgomery - Monty for short - went to his new home yesterday, and the report I received from Afton, his new mom, was that he was doing great, didn't seem to care much for the dog, and was purring and laying on her bed.  Yay!

CHANCE - Skin and Bone
I received this note from Chance's mom.  I am so grateful to her for keeping me updated on his progress.  He is the kitty I almost had euthanized one very cold, very miserable morning until Saturday Sheryl interceded and said, let me take him, see what I can do with him.  Under my direction, she brought him to a vet that supports my rescue, and we got him his initial exam, which was grim.  He was severely underweight, malnourished, etc.  But Sheryl did her magic, and here he is today.  His new family loves him dearly.  Thanks Jen for this recent update!  PS, his new name is Tobin!

"Hi Janine –
Time for a Tobin Chance update! He is so stinkin’ cute, I can’t stand it. He’s sweet, happy, and just a good little boy. He likes to sit on the pillows on the bed in the back bedroom looking out the window. When I go in he pops his little head up and says “meow!” Still has the quietest little voice. He’s funny – if I talk to him (meow!) he talks back to me. When I come home from work and call his name, I can hear his little voice calling back to me. He purrs loud now, loud enough to hear him without putting my head on this back. He even lets me pet his belly now. He comes down to the landing on the stairs in the evenings and hangs out in a bed he likes there. He plays with the string and likes to bat his foil ball and mice up and down the stairs.

On the 19th we adopted a new dog. I was pretty worried about him since he can be so timid. We brought the new dog in the house, and within an hour here he comes! He walked right up to her, sniffed around and walked away. We were shocked, couldn’t believe he actually did that. He has not had any issues with her at all and he’s just sort of rolling with it. He has really come a long way since we adopted him."

Hump Day!

It was a quiet morning out there.  The calm before the storm.  Today, Monty will be delivered to his new home.  Thanks so much to his foster mom Gaye.  You see, Gaye saved Monty’s life when it comes right down to it.  If it weren’t for her offering to foster him, he would still be on the street, and chances of him surviving are slim.  There are so many dangers out there, especially on city streets.  Fosters are so important.  Now, with Monty going to hopefully a great home – Afton has a roommate with a gentle lab – and Gaye has offered to take another.  There is another STEVIE out there, on the corner of Grand Avenue and Stout Street.  He is a SWEETHEART.  Runs to me, and follows me back to the car.  Thursday, tomorrow, I am hoping to grab him.  I may be grabbing him in the rain – praying he comes to me if it is.

There is also a seven month old kitten that is just as sweet as can be that I want to rescue.  I just need a foster.  And the female that I TNR’d last week on Melville, she is very very sweet.  And very very tiny now that she is not having babies.  I would love to find her a home, and fast.

Kings and I battened down some tarps –  we are due some very strong winds beginning tomorrow, and some heavy rain.  Many thanks to Gary and June for the drop off Monday, and many thanks to Kim who also dropped off a load of tarps.  I needed smaller sized camo tarps, and they delivered.  Many thanks to Susan and her husband Bart who dropped off four large Styrofoam boxes.  After painting, they were all delivered to their prospective locations.  I discovered one was trashed this morning.  That’s just mean.  On Short Street, on the vacant brick house that belongs to Jimmy, who I have shared many nice conversations with.  I think its his son coming back and doing stuff like that.  He never touches the plates of food and water bowl, but demolished the lid of the shelter.  Just mean.

My needs?  Bricks, and heavy rocks.  I had to scavenge for them this morning.

The Paint and Purr is now solidly booked.  We had spots for 40 and we are just there.  Thank you every one for signing up, and thank you to those that just made a donation toward it.  It should be fun!  The picture is one that Kristin created.  Pumpkins.   Should be fairly easy!

Thanks to Carol at Mileage Master, she is doing a food drive for myself and Carol, who also does TNR and rescue around the city.  Here is the flier for that.  I hope you will consider, and participate!

Have a great day!

I visitited the new babies, Stella's babies, this weekend!  ADORABLE!

These are just a few pics.  They are already moving!  They were just born less than a week ago!  Their eyes opened!  :)

Festivities...

In response to the comment last week when the woman was slumped over the steering wheel, and someone mentioning me carrying Narcan... (sp?) ... thanks Scout and Huck's mom for your comment yesterday!  Thankfully, yesterday's scare was a rare occurrence, and thankfully, the paramedics were there within minutes.

It was a very busy weekend.  But there were times for relaxation!  My grammar school friend had a party at her house.  What a gorgeous fall day it was to sit outside and RELAX.  I am showing you a very rare occurrence, a picture of me!  :)  and my friends.

ME and My Little Friend ELLA!

I also got to see Muffin yesterday.  He is still a bit on the shy side.  He is not shy though with his foster Melissa though!  He acts like a regular cat with her!  We were able to trim his nails, which were daggers.  Whoever winds up with Muffin will have hit a jackpot.  Loyal to the end, once he gains your trust, which won’t take long.  He is a gorgeous soft furred cat.

Max finally went to his new home on Sunday.  He has been with Foster Sue for a while now, and is now being loved in a new home.  He had a canine brother (or sister?) – I can’t wait for the update!

MAX
On Saturday morning I brought Goldilocks to her new home.  Remember Goldilocks?  She was the mother of SEVEN kittens!  I unfortunately did not record the rescue of Goldi, which I am sad about.  Does anyone out there remember her circumstances?  Anyway, she is now with her new mom, but having trouble with diarrhea, so she is on a pro biotic and a change in food.  Grain free.  Any other suggestions?  We will give her time – she has moved from one home to another, and hopefully will now settle in to her forever person.

I received word that little Daniel has not been well received at his ‘new home’ by the older resident cat, Cocoa Bean.  He will most likely go back to his original foster mom Sue’s house.  Sad.  His person right now is sad too.  I am sure she wishes this were easier on Cocoa Bean AND Daniel.  Any suggestions would help!

DANIEL
Finally, a woman came over yesterday to meet Junebug and Joey.  As usual, Joey was a BRAT and wasn’t very sweet.  He just hid and cried being stuck on the porch for a few hours.  Junebug was Junebug, just a little sweetie.  The woman fell in love, and is willing to give Joey time to trust.  She wants to adopt them both!  I have very mixed feelings on this as I have spent so much time and money on them.  Junebug mainly.  I do love them, but need to move forward with them.  I am trying to dwindle the number of cats I have, and this will help.  I just pray they adjust to a new home.  I am so worried.

More on street stories tomorrow.

Have to get off to work!

Have a great day!

Perseverance

ELLIE w/Foster Mom Sue (He would love to be adopted!)

A quiet morning out there.  We hurried more than usual due to impending rain this morning.  I wanted to be sure the 'under the tree' kitties could eat their food without being rained upon.  I can sure use smaller CAMO tarps.  8x10?  7x11?  Not sure if they make that size.  I have some shelters that are small enough.  Remember, for anyone reading for the first time, I am trying to shelter the cats that have NOTHING.  When there is a storm, or when they just want to rest.  Rest is needed for everyone and everything.  Can you imagine sleeping under a bush?  Or under a filthy porch with a hole in it and you have to crawl in and out of that hole?  Can you imagine it being ZERO degrees, or even 20 for that matter.  And having nothing to keep  you warm.  Can you imagine it blizzarding outside?  This is where TWO shelters AND a board, AND a pallet, AND a tarp come in to play.  The two shelters are facing each other with room on the inside to place food and water and for the cat to stand comfortably.  The board goes over the two shelters like a roof, and the tarp goes over all that, leaving room for the cat to enter.  The tarp is weighted down with heavy brick or rocks to keep it from blowing off.    Ideally, it should be THREE shelters – one in the back, the other two facing each other.  This is what makes an actual shelter, out of three totes.  And ideally, the shelter should be facing the east, because storms brew mostly from the west.  When it snows, you have to shovel the snow around the shelter so the cats can get in and out.  There are so many things to consider.  And think about it.  I have over 20 shelters out there, consisting of three containers at each location.

MUFFIN says ADOPT ME!

RORY!
BOTH NEED HOMES!!!

I recently did a fundraiser on Facebook – I’ve never done one and I was not hopeful for a big turnout of donations, but I got enough so far to cover my $2K+ bill at the clinic, a balance at Pittsford Animal hospital, with a little left over for food, which is $150 per week.  Thank you to all that have contributed to it.  I know money is precious, and I thank you for parting with yours for help with the care of our precious homeless animals out there.  I am continuing the fundraiser until January.  We will see how it goes.  Although, then again, I am not sure if they pay you in increments before the fundraiser ends.  Does anyone know?

The turnout is progressing for the Paint and Purr on November 2nd.  It should be fun.  Kristin and her friend Susan, both art teachers at Gates-Chili High School will be the artists teaching us how to paint a pretty picture.  Bonus:  There is a bar.  J  Its at the Churchville Moose Lodge from 12-3.  We only have 40 spots so reservations must be made with me prior.

STELLA and her six kittens!

After that we have the Feed a Cat for Christmas campaign!  I spend $40+ to feed 100+ cats daily.  Yes, that is how much it cost me to each day when I pack up the dry food (44lbs) and the wet food (over a case of the large cans).

That’s it for today.

Make it a great one!

Happy Monday!

What a weekend.  Saturday Sheryl and sometimes Saturday Kim and I went out and did the rounds, and built up some shelters getting ready for winter.  That was a chore in itself, but then I wound up going home and later do some major cleaning and moving furniture around and could barely move by Saturday afternoon.  The pain in my joints was unbelievable.  I could barely walk or raise my arms.  This getting old sucks sometimes.  Its not that I AM old, its my joints that are caving in, and its all due to CATS!  I have been bending and stooping for how many years now, feeding cats outdoors?  Everything is ground level so I have to BEND.  Its done a number on my joints, and hip!  Damn cats!

It was a nice morning out there.  41 degrees.  Cool enough to turn on the heat in the truck, but warm enough to open a window.  There is always some excitement in the morning.  Today was no exception.  I turned the corner to Central Park off Goodman at 4:30 am. and there was a car, not quiet pulled to the side, so had to inch my way past it.  As I went past, the light was on in the side, the window open, and a person slumped over.  I turned around and drove by again to confirm.  Yup, slumped.  I called 911 and went about my business.  After doing Short Street, I turned back around to see if anyone showed up.  An ambulance was there.  I thought that strange that there was no police.  I stopped and listened.  I could hear them asking about alcohol, I could see two medical personnel – one at her opened door, the other on the other door.  I could hear the person, it was a woman, behind the wheel.  She was denying stuff that they were asking (alcohol, drugs).  I drove off after feeling like a nosey Nellie.  We went about doing a few more locations to feed the babies, but I just HAD to find out if the police arrived.  And sure enough, now there were TWO ambulances, and THREE police cars.  I just HAD to be the nosey Nellie again, inched my way past them, and I thought I saw a child in the passenger seat.  Can you imagine, the woman is slumped over unconscious, and the child is just sitting there?  Later, we thought we saw a tow truck drive past us on Bay Street with said car.  We were pretty sure an arrest was made.  Crazy.

DANIEL
Daniel went to a new home on Sunday!  They are former adopters of Esmeralda, from years ago.  They renamed her Cocoa Bean.  Daniel was quite shy when I delivered him, and I am waiting on an update.  I pray Cocoa Bean accepts her new little brother.  In the meantime, he is alone.  But the parents and their children were totally in love with him, so I am happy about that.  Thank you dear Sue for your selfless fostering.  You’ve not had a break from kittens, and it can be overwhelming.

Jac is still waiting on a home too!  Lets get her adopted!

JAC
Sue took in two new kittens – Lexi and Mya – and I saw them on Sunday.  They are two tiny balls of fluff.  Gorgeous kittens.  Now we just need to get Rory and Lily adopted!  And Ellie!  And Weenie!  We are waiting on Max to be adopted by a woman named Liz.  She was supposed to take another kitten, Parker, who passed away.  She will be picking out a new kitten to pair with Max.

Stella and her six babies!
I went to visit the new Mother, we named her Stella.  Estelle is the foster mom for her and her six newbies, that were born on Wednesday of last week.   They are gorgeous kittens, and Stella looks a lot like Fluffy, who is still with Stella.  We still have Fluffy, Monty, Muffin and Sara to get adopted out – they are all adults.  Adult cats make the best cats. They are so grateful to their rescuers/fosters.

Parsells Kittens
Finally for today, Chuck and Danielle rescued the second kitten from Parsells #3.  The first one they rescued, I had them bring to Pittsford Animal Hospital as they are good about getting a kitten in last minute for me.  They think its 6 weeks old, covered in fleas, and said too early to get combo tested.  I am not sure about that, I’ve had other kittens combo tested at that age, I think, but I am glad that they got this second one.  Chuck had to tear apart my shelter, but put it back together again nicely.  Thanks Chuck.  They are holding on to these two for now.  Chuck thinks there is a third kitten.  We MUST get this tortie mama fixed. I am sure this is NOT her first litter.

That’s it for me!

Have a great day!

TGIF

Man o man...  so true.  Its been a long week.  Lots of ups and downs.  Yesterday it was pure rain.  Today, just clouds.  I can deal with clouds.  Its the rain that makes it tough, especially when you are feeding cats under trees, or by the side of the road.  There are four spots where that is happening.  You know that there is going to be some soggy food left in those bowls when you get there the next morning after it rains.

Then there is Niagara Street.  This evil person who keeps taking the boards is not going to stop.  I left a very slim board - just enough to cover the food - against the building there - and he came by and took the board again.  I said to myself, after I drove off this morning, after feeding the SEVEN sweet cats that have been there FOREVER - and believe me, they all run to me when I pull up - I thought to myself - this man will be in hell someday, with boards surrounding him.  The police can't do anything with just his license plate.  They sent a letter to his address, and asked for him to call them, but he did not respond, and I was told if they can't ID him, they can't add him to a crime report.   I just hope KARMA gets him, and gets him good.  Nasty no life person.

I had a female kitty TNR'd yesterday, with release this morning, from Melville Street.  Earlier this year, she was very pregnant and when I was going to grab her for spay, she disappeared.  I didn't see her for weeks and weeks.  Then I did and she was very skinny.  I never found her kittens.  I don't think they survived.  I finally had her spayed yesterday.  I felt terrible releasing her this morning as she is a very sweet little girl.   But my fosters are full, and I didn't know someone had offered on Facebook until too late.  She is on my list, but there are others before her.

I received a call from Foster Sue who was alerted by her daughter that someone she knows found out about a cat at a trailer park that was left behind after the people moved, pregnant, and just had her babies.  Sue asked what we should do.  After some thought, I called Foster Mom Estelle and asked her if she was ready.  The last mom and kittens she fostered - all have gone to greener pastures except for Fluffy the mom.  Still trying to get her adopted, although Estelle has her sights on her right now.  :)   Meet the latest family of SEVEN.

That's all I have for today.

Don't forget about the Paint and Purr painting party on 11/2!  Please reserve your seat today!

Have a great day.

Huck and Scout Update

IT was a nice mild morning.  I was thinking as I was walking to the back of vacant lots in the dark, boy its sure going to be different soon. I will need to start wearing my snow boots son enough, and I've got to find those traky dax – those things you put on the bottom of your shoes to walk on snow/ice --- I don’t think that is the right name for them.  I think tracky dacks is an Australian slang for something..  Oh well.. my friend in Kansas had a pair sent to me after I broke my ankle back in February.  Anyways, I am building up a shelter on 4th and Pennsylvania for the few black cats and a tabby that I’ve been feeding all summer under a tree there.  I have sort of hidden two little shelters with a board on top to keep the rain that is due to day, away.  I pray no one spots it and removes or destroys it.  My other iffy is Parsells #1 where I am SNEAKING in silence to feed against the house in front, sort of behind a bush there, while the person inside could easily hear me if sitting right there at the window above.  They removed my shelters earlier this year, and I’ve slowly been putting them back under the bush.  It’s a double house, and the people that moved in on the other side kept removing the food, and the boards I would place to protect the food when it rained, so I moved to the other side.  That person seems to either have no knowledge of the food bowls and shelters, or just doesn’t care.  It’s a dirty area, and there are certainly rats, but the cats that live there and depend on the food is a strong enough motivation for me to sneak around to make sure they are fed.  The cats.  Not the rats.  The rats could live on the trash around the area easily.

SOPHIE!
Sophie, the beautiful long haired tortie I rescued from Short Street two weeks ago, who was being fostered by Max, is now in a new home.  She was delivered to Paul yesterday, and from what I was told, she sniffed around, ran to Paul for a pet, sniffed around again, ran to Kings, and just went exploring.  Apparently there is a lot to explore in Pauls house, which is somewhat cluttered I am told, but clean.  Paul is retired from the county, the Sherriffs office – and thanks to a retired officer, Liz, he was treated to food and a new litter pan. Liz even paid for Sophie’s spay by calling in to the clinic to make a donation in her name.  Thanks Liz.  I do hope Paul keeps me posted on Sophie.  Apparently he said she would work out just fine.  He was already loving her.  And thanks to Max for fostering.

The Muffin Man
Speaking of fostering, I want to thank Melissa for taking Muffin back after packing his bags and sending him off into the world the first time she fostered him a few years back.  I am so sorry that he was returned, and went through the ordeal of hiding in the ducts of Max’s house, but am grateful to her for offering to take him in once again. He’s had a lot of interest, but no takers.  Its not that he doesn’t show well, you should see how wonderful he is with Melissa, jumping into her lap now, playing, and just being a cat, its that people don’t follow through after showing interest.

Goldilocks Babies...  UPDATE!

"Just wanted to send a quick happy update your way and send along a few pictures!

These two babies have brought so much joy into our home.  They have such wonderfully different personalities.  Scout is sweet and loving and lets us pick her up and hold her upside-down like a little baby.  She is gentle with her little paws and plays so nicely with Ada (6 years old).  She loves having her belly petted and follows me from room to room all day.  Huckleberry is a quite a character - he makes us laugh all day long with his antics.  Just today he took a dip in the toilet, knocked over a wastebasket, and carried a crumpled sheet of paper around the house in his mouth like a dog.  But when he's exhausted from playing, he enjoys chilling with his humans and has the loudest purr we've ever heard!

The big surprise to all of us has been how much joy the babies have brought to our senior kitty.  He is 16 and grouchy and set in his ways, so we weren't quite sure what to expect.  For the first few days there was a bit of hissing but very quickly the three of them started playing and sleeping together!  Kitters seems like a kitten again himself bounding around and playing with the little ones.  He even grooms them and is gently tolerant when they jump on his tail!  Huckleberry in particular (who looks like a Kitters mini-me) is like Kitters' BFF and follows him around everywhere he goes.  The kittens have brought a sparkle into Kitters' eyes again and we are so pleased he will have loving companionship in his golden years.

We are so happy to have these little ones and so thankful to both of you for all that you do for cats in need."

This stuff makes my day!

Have a good day!

LEXI
It was a great weekend.  I just wish they were longer.  I totally did some organizing of stuff that I hadn’t gotten to since I broke my ankle in February.  Namely, the basement.  It was a good feeling, and I purged a ton of stuff, but there is still so much more.  The garage is another nightmare.  But please, if anyone is thinking of supplying me with Plates, Bowls, or towels, please don’t.  I have MORE than I need.  I am always in need though of camouflage tarps, on the smaller side.  I am always in need of cat food, both wet and dry.  Preferably the larger cans of wet.  You have no idea what its like opening, scooping out, and then cleaning the cans when done to bring to Mileage Master who then brings to a metal recycling place in exchange for cash.  Cash for Cats.  Thank you Carol Peath for doing this dirty job week after week!

MONTY
Thank you Sheryl and Kim who came out on Saturday and helped me to fill some shelters with needed straw, and tidy some things up.  We found an opened can of paint – white – on Melville and a cooler full of nails.  Right next to my shelter.  I moved the paint to the curb on Melville, and took the nails.  I could have had some real damage done if whoever decided to throw it on the tarp and shelters, and the nails, well those are just plain dangerous too.  The next morning, nothing was disturbed, nor this morning, so I was happy.

Daniel

I saw a baby red kitten on Bay Street, at my Syd and Johnny’s auto repair location.  I have no idea where that came from.  It ran when I approached it.  Speaking of babies, Danielle and Chuck, who feed at the Parsells #3 location, have spotted two kittens.  They went twice this weekend to try to grab them. No luck.

Sophie, who I rescued from Short Street two weeks ago, is going to go to Paul.  Paul recently lost his kitty, and wants a female to pal around with.  He is a good cat dad and promised me he would love his new kitty unconditionally.  I messaged foster dad Max to see if her bags were packed.  It will most likely happen tomorrow, Tuesday.
