They did it again. This time, they removed a small village of shelters that housed many kitties. Most recently rescued were Sassy, the kitten, now in a new home, and Cookie, who had the infected uterus. Prior to them, at least 15 cats have been rescued from these shelters, and adopted over the past seven to 10 years these shelters have been here, hiding, where no one can see them, on city vacant land. Someone is systematically removing all my shelters. I don't know where to turn. I am beyond saddened by this, for these animals. That's three viable homes that were removed by the City of Rochester since last Wednesday. I don't know what I will find tomorrow.
Someone must be reading this blog and taking notes as to where my shelters are. I hope you know, you have once again confused and upset a group of cats that are NOT feral, they are HOMELESS due to no fault of their own, and I am doing my best to RESCUE all the cats like this, but I can't do it, nor SPAY AND NEUTER, without these shelters to rescue them from!
STOP DOING THIS! Leave the cats alone!
A news photographer followed me on my route this morning and captured some very haunting images, including this now vacant spot, with the cats there waiting and wondering what was happening.
I will be interviewed this morning by Channel 13. I pray something good comes out of this. So far, nothing but bad has happened.
I am sickened by the actions of the City of Rochester right now. Again, don't know who to point my finger at.
Have a nice day.
I am sickened too and that woman in charge of refuse and vacant lots never called me back. I will call AGAIN today. WTF!!!!
ReplyDeleteDid you call 311 and is this person's name Nancy??
DeleteThe person in charge of Refuse and vacant lots is Karon St.Aubin she took Karon Simoni's position when she retired from the City.
DeleteOMG! Can you send a lookout person to "hover" around the streets and keep an eye out for someone or a city vehicle?
ReplyDeleteJanine – You are a star. Your efforts in saving these animals and improving their often short lives is admirable and should be supported fully by those who are in a position to help your efforts not hinder them. Shame on City Hall. Are they ignorant to the benefits to their own city of what you are doing? Do they not realise that if it was not for your efforts and for the efforts of animal lovers like you that they would be coping with far more feral and stray cats?
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work that you do.
I believe that we must be cautious perhaps not disclose if colonies should be moved or replaced in a few days weeks, orders could be given to collect and euthanize to end this potentially bad publicity.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. You heard the gentlemen say the had orders from the Monroe County Health Dept. to destroy any structures that could promote the infestation of the Rat population. However everybody knows that where there is a group of cats there will never be rats.... I to am worried they could start trapping the cats and killing them like they use to do all the time. I understand it is awful that they are destroying and taking away the cats homes, but better that the cats are alive, then orders go out to start trapping them and killing them. I understand it's a injustice, but one must be careful not to upset people in power. The consequences could be very costly to the poor innocent cats.
DeleteThey did this in my borough right after Homeless Cat Management Team came in and TNR'd all the strays and ferals. It was sickening to those who fed them to find them all disappearing only to find out what the borough was doing after all the hard work by HCMT. We had been on our way to winning the fight, humanely.

DeleteSueAnn, That's my fear too. That the city will try to get rid of the problem by poisoning the cats or trapping them and euthanizing them. I wasn't too happy to see a map on the news reports pinpointing all the spots where Janine goes to feed! Otherwise, it was a good job by the reporter. And a great job by Janine!
ReplyDeleteThis world would be a much better place if we all were more like Janine and cared as much as she does.
ReplyDeleteAlan
And let's not forget those that help her.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the City destroying these kitties; it would be nice if a group could actually meet with the Mayor or someone who could help us - discuss what we can do to help the kitties. If they have input into homes/structures - maybe we'd get more buy-in into the end result.
ReplyDeleteI am so Disgusted with the City of Rochester for their recent actions. I worked so hard in getting Lovely to recognize Janine for her daily tireless sacrifices while seeing that these defenseless felines are fed, sheltered and medicated. How can they in one instance proclaim a day in Janine's Honor and then resort to destroying these poor Kitties only homes. I am totally outraged. I used to consider Norman Jones(Commissioner of Dept. of Environmental Services a friend of 32 yrs. however, after he went on record with Channel 13 as he did and blatantly lied about rat infestation to justify their despicable conduct he no longer is a friend of Karon's or myself. Anyone with half a Brain understands that Cats keep the Rat(Rodent) population under control. The City is using that as an excuse for their unjustified and deplorable actions. They may very well have been in the right to remove your shelters Janine but did not have the right to destroy them. We need to commence an on-line petition insisting that the City address and assist these Homeless Cats as many other communities have such as Batavia, New York did recently.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the Excellent work (Cat Angel)! We are with you in this righteous fight!

I agree Walt; this political arena is not for me - but the kitties and poor Janine suffer from it. If a committee of us could learn how other areas have conquered this problem, maybe our pleas would be louder - solid solutions that could either be accepted or rejected. I personally would love to see Janine not have to go every morning like she does - yet know the kitties are fed and safe.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Janine, for putting your caring into action for the homeless cats. May I suggest you meet face to face with a member of RCC (Rochester City Council) to talk over this entire problem. Once you've established that one/one connection with the RCC rep, then people could speak at a monthly RCC meeting on behalf of the animals, hopefully with that rep's support. Hope this is helpful.
