December 12 - LIZ~! December 13 - ROBIN! December 14 - NANCY!!!

Congratulations to Liz (December 12), Robin (December 13) and Nancy (December 14)!  All three of you!  Liz fed a cat on Saturday, Robin fed a cat on Sunday, and Nancy fed a cat this morning!  Thank you all so much.  Do you realize, that combined, all three of you actually fed 210 cats?  That's over 70 cats per day that I feed.  Its amazing.  Nancy donated in memory of Baxter, a kitty I rescued and that she adopted who passed on Thanksgiving day. Her note read 'I miss you so much Baxter."  I remember each and every one of these sweet souls that are lucky enough to be rescued and rehomed.  Thank you Liz, Robin and Nancy, for all you do for the kitties.

PATCHES
I know you are all wondering about Patches.  First off, Dr. Gryshey is wonderful.  What a great man.  He certainly knows his stuff, and all about stomatitis.  He shook my hand upon entrance, and began to talk about the disease in general.  He then had a look at Patches mouth, and said he had not one, but TWO ulcers.  He said Patches was in a great deal of pain, which was why he was gulping down the dry food now, rather than wet food as he was.  He went to great lengths explaining this and that, but my feeble mind couldn't grasp it all.   He told me that I had two choices, basically.  One, he could remove all the teeth, and that would be well over $700, even at rescue rates, and hope that out of the 80% that cats with this condition are successful, that Patches is in the 20%.  He said it was not a guarantee, and even with that, he would be on medication for the remainder of his life, IF it worked.  I then explained to him how he was now fearful of me going into his room thinking I am going to put something painful in his mouth.  He hides under the bed.  He then said the only other choice would be euthanasia.  He said that cat is in a great deal of pain.   The tongue is what cats use to eat, and he can't do that.  At the end, he mentioned how my situation is like a herd mentality.  He said imagine you are a farmer and you have a herd of cows, and one of them is very sick.  Are you going to put all your resources into that one cow and the others suffer?  He mentioned how there are people that will use up a huge amount of resource to help a cat that has even a 5% chance of total recovery for any illness or injury.  I could not do that.  As he said, I have a lot more to save.

I love Patches.  I love him so much.  We have obviously bonded since I rescued him way back in early October.  I am constantly second guessing my choice, but I know in my heart he is better off.  He has a debilitating disease.  But he allows me to pet him, brush him, and hold him for moments. Then I see what pain he is in, day in and day out.  He cries just looking at the food he cannot eat.  So I will make the appointment this week, and won't speak of this again.  Thank you to all of you that have supported me making this decision and those that support me now.  I am also thankful to those of you that recommended me getting this second opinion.  It was the right thing to do.  I also want to thank those of you for calling in to donate - Laurie H., Nancy, Liz and Pat.  I had them rip up your credit card numbers, as the bill was $50 and I paid it from a rebate Visa card I had received.

On to other news.  LOOK who was adopted!!!  The girl that took Stan a few days ago, called and said, if you can get the other two at that location, Stan's brother Stevie, who I had TNR'd two weeks ago, and Stewie, the black kitty that head butts me until I put his food down on Short Street!, I will take them!   So sure enough, Saturday morning, I grabbed them.   :)  Did I get lucky, or what?  This girl works for the same hospital as I do - you just never know, eh?

That makes .....  OVER 80 cats I've rescued and found homes for THIS YEAR!  But who's counting?  :)

STEVIE

STEWIE

Now we must get Buttons, Buddy, Nora and Violet a home!  I can then get Parsley, Prince, and his two cohorts off the street and into warmth before the winter sets in.  Please spread the word!

PS, Great news on Francie, she is fitting right in to her new home!

Have a great day!

  2. Thank you for adopting two more souls from the streets - mother of Stan!@! I'm so sorry about Patches; you did all you could Janine and I know this is a hard decision but one you must make. Nancy C.

  3. So happy for Stevie and Stewie. So sorry about Patches. It is always hard but we never want our furbabies to suffer. I am glad you saw Dr. Gryshey--my neighbor says he is wonderful, too. It is really difficult to find a good vet...Lord knows how many arrogant idiots I have run through in order to find a really great vet! The amount of incompetence is astounding...just like in the human medical profession. Thank you, Janine, for taking the time and making the effort to get a second opinion for Patches. Laurie H.

  4. Patches again...was so blessed to have you find him. He knew what it was like to have a mommy and daddy...that was and is a forever gift. So many learned so much about this illness and how to go about making a difficult decision because you cared enough to share and put yourself out there for some "know it all, ignorant, unsolicited comments I am sure" But you do it again and again. Those are some strong shoulders on you Janine.. Patches is a success...he succeeded in sharing his love and personality despite his struggle with pain. what a champ he is. Stay Strong Janine. love SueAnn

  5. Ok here goes . Block me if you want. Julie Lafferty offered to take Patches, get his teeth done and raise the money for it. SHE has asked me to post this. No one in their right mind would refuse such an offer and PREFER TO KILL PATCHES rather than have a caring compassionate person like Julie take him and have him treated. Cats with this disease lead long and healthy lives once treated. Anyone who would PREFER TO KILL to maintain their own face and EGO is a SICK SICK MF and all you people who contiinue to support and stroke her EGO are sick or at the very keadt horribly naive and mislead.
As she us having him KILLED UNNECESSARILY AT THIS VETY MOMEMT she wont be able to block this. I want the TRUTH to be know. I AND OTHERS are LIVID. This is a travesty. She hung up on julie after her very generous and loving offer and regused to let poor Patches be loved and treated. The vet did not say this cat SHOULD BE KILLED. The vet said that IF there was not the money etc to treat him that it was an alternative to end his pain a viable and far better alternative was offered, but the ANGEL OF DEATH refused it. Someone who prwfers Death over Life is no friend of mine. We WILL make this known publicly. I am writing this at my own and Jylies request.

  6. As of this moment yet another wonderful and PRO LIFE RESCUE has offered to take Patches and again she has refused. Amazing and horrifying at best, grotesque and egotistical and sicknot even the worst adjectives I can come up with. Janine you maode al REAL BAD CALL ON THIS ONE. AS MUCH GOOD AS YOU HAVE DONE- your ego sure called the wrong shot on this one if you go thru with this. You are turning the rescue community AGAINST YOU with this terrible stubborn egotistical selfish decision.
I want everyone to know that I wrote to Janine in PRIVATE EMAIL because my intent was NOT to make her look bad. Then I got a msg from others who offered to take him and her blanket refusal of allowing anyone else to help him. No one would have faulted Janine AT ALL for turning him over to a rescue group for further care and treatment. No one would expect Janine to get all his teeth removed and get further treatment. But to REFUSE him the help of not one but two rescue groups/peopleand to prefer to kill him unnecessarily is unconscionable.

    1. so judgmental when you do not have the facts..suffering and pain , with minimal hope for recovery ..I am too compassionate for that.. being a retired RN I do have some expertise on this!

    2. An 80% chance of being cured and 20 % chance will need occasional meds for flare is minimal chance of recovery? What the hell nursing school did you graduate from?

      Delete
  7. Carole is correct I offered to raise the funds for his surgery and offered to take him and was refused and hung up on for making her feel bad. I had a donor to cover the 700.00. This cat had an 80% chance of full recovery. 20% need prednisone when they have flare ups of surgery doesn't cure. I just went through this with my own cat. Dr gshrey did not recommend euthanasia he supported the choice when she said she couldn't afford it. This cat will die now because of ego. Sad and disgusting. Anyone that wants all the details may contact me julielafferty@netzero.net

  8. The situation with Patches is heartbreaking. It is ALWAYS a heartbreaking decision to end the suffering of a pet. But that decision is made every day, thousands of times, for as many reasons. Is every one of those people making that decision a horrible person? No. I have put my angels to sleep when their suffering robbed them of any joy. I know that some of you believe that Patches can be cured and go on to live a long, happy life - but how much additional pain and suffering is acceptable to you and would you subject him to to possibly (not guaranteed) get to that point? The cat is being traumatized by not only his illness and pain but by the administration of meds that Janine has attempted. To the point where Patches now hides in fear, cowers and trembles each time Janine comes near him. Janine HAS been trying to help Patches for 2 months and he is not getting better. I am Janine's friend. I do not want Patches to be euthanized, it breaks my heart, it breaks Janine's heart - but I don't want him to suffer anymore and neither does she. And the bottom line is this is a very personal, difficult decision and as much as you might hate it, you just don't say horrible things about a person - especially when that person is already suffering and heartbroken over Patches. It's just cruel. And yes - you can love an animal and be heartbroken over your decision to euthanize and still do it, because deep down in your heart you can't allow them to hurt and suffer anymore.

    1. I respectfully disagree. I have a cat with the same disease. If patches was given buprenorphine for his pain he would have been ok until surgery. He wasn't given the proper pain control for the last 2 months which is why he was suffering so much. I offered to take him and pay the bill to make him better. He could have been cured like Ralphie and so many others. The reason she gave to end his life was not because of his pain. She didn't have the money and didn't want to waste the money on him. Her words to me. I offered to get a donor who doesn't normally give to her she wouldn't have gotten that money anyway and take him. I am very experienced at this disease and could have helped relieve his pain and get him surgery right away so he could be happy and healthy like so many others. She refused my help and others. It was due to ego. I am 100% positive of that. She lied to people about what the vet said and twisted things around. This cat didn't have to die. It is a huge tragedy and shouldn't have happened. No excuses can make up for this one.

    2. "She didn't have the money and didn't want to waste the money on him." - Listen Drama Queen, I had no intention of getting in on the drama that you constantly create, but you are saying things that simply are not true. I would NEVER say that. OR think it. All the other 'opinions' you, or anyone that is as zealous as you are, has of me, I could care less. You are nothing but a bully. You need to open your eyes my 'friend'. And stop your bashing. You should really concentrate on your own problems than trying to make me look bad. You already succeeded in hurting me with your words. Move on.

    3. Those were your words I quoted. And you are the one trash talking me to my friends. You know you killed him and it shouldn't have happened. I am disgusted at your actions and will let you try and sugar coat your lies but you can't lie to me. I know everything because YOU told me! Drama queen? Seriously? Go have another drink you make me sick!

    4. Please Ladies stop hurting each other with such harsh words. You are bringing tears to a grown man with 33 years in Law Enforcement and a former US Marine. Personally, I believe as I have stated on numerous occasions that Janine is a Cat Angel with only the bests interests of the Cats in mind. Janine, if this person is indeed sincere in paying for all of Patches Veterinary bills and subsequently adopting him perhaps that is a viable solution. I would ask you to please consider the proposed offer if Patches hasn't already been Euthanized.

    6. What friends has she talked shit to regarding you? Have they stuck up for you? Or did they continue on with the tongue lashing she has been sending your way? And what has she said? Is she doing her normal "let's get every one hysterical and turn them against a fellow rescuer"? That is what she is known for doing. The more shit she talks the more people she turns against you. In the long run janine loses the supporters she has. Ultimately, it hurts the animals that Janine interacts with everyday. You claim to love animals so much but what you fail to see is the big picture. The more lies you spread about this woman the more people turn their back on her. In turn the less animals she can help. So I hope you feel good about yourself right now. I truly don't think you see past your own nose. If you did, you wouldn't be spreading these lies and trying to destroy her reputation. You are the epitome of a bacstabbing bitch! This has been your friend for so long but the moment you don't agree with her decision you trash her, her reputation and her mission. So great to see who you really are. I guess I've been truly blinded by you through the years. I have believed you and stood by you over the years. But, it turns out your a freaking nut job! You call yourself a rescuer. But a true rescuer would never compromise another rescuer. That just goes to show who you really are. You are a detriment to those in the rescue world. You may not see it that way, but I'm sure if I see it than many more also see it.

  10. If Patches is still alive, I hope you will reconsider giving him a chance with someone that can afford to treat him and see if he can survive & thrive. If you made the decision to put him to sleep, that's a decision you will have to live with. Right? Wrong? Who are we to judge? You see the sadness every single day... the bottom line is, the ABSOLUTE BOTTOM LINE is.... we should all be working together. Read that again- WORK TOGETHER. This problem will not get solved over night. BUT it will NEVER get solved with all of the infighting & brutal words exchanged. Like each other, hate each other but for the sake of those homeless cats that are out in the pouring, cold rain tonight, waiting for their next meal, WE ALL NEED to work TOGETHER and come together for them. Period. There are many more cats out there that need help. Slamming the door closed on one person only hurts these cats. PLEASE,,,,, their lives depend on us.....

    1. I have read the comments directed towards Janine by Carole Reed and Julie Lafferty. Julie and Carole you have assassinated Janines's character and well as undermined her personal integrity because you disagreed with her decision to end the intolerable pain and suffering endured by a helpless and very ill cat . Janine made the correct and the best decision for Patches.

    2. Sue Ann the odds are 80% cute not 20! Call the vet and ask him. He did my cat for the same thing. Google stomatitis and read 80% are cured and do not need meds for life that is a lie! He was NEVER given buprenorphine which is the pain med he needed THAT IS WHY HE WAS SUFFERING NEEDLESSLY! Know the facts before speaking! She was offers pain meds for him and declined them!

      Delete
    3. And FYI SueAnn I have had 5 cats CURED from stomatitis with surgery as have many of my fellow rescuers. Please google feline stomatitis so you can read the REAL story about it. 80% are cured after surgery. The other 20% get relief and just need a steroid when they have a flare up not a big deal. No cat should be killed for stomatitis especially when there were people willing to take him and pay for his surgery!

      Delete
  12. From stomatitis website: , 80% of cats respond well to having their teeth removed, meaning their stomatitis goes away. That also means that 20% of cats continue to suffer from stomatitis after having their teeth taken out. It can take up to six months after teeth are removed to know if the surgery was a success. The reason it takes so long is because it takes months for the mouth to heal from stomatitis.

    1. I do do what she does I have a feral colony and started and ran a rescue for 9 years! I offered to take that cat as did other rescuers experience with the disease. You are obviously fooled by her woe is me lies so I am done talking to you

  14. I am assuming Julie is one of these anonymous writers.. Julie. I can one hundred percent guarantee that you do not have the full story on the vets this cat saw, what meds he took etc. I'd like to add. that once I took it upon my self to try and help one of the kitties in Janines care. I goofed up but never did she personally attack me, she supported me, we communicated, we acted in the best interest of the cat and well my needs to feel safe too. That is what people who need to work together need to do. WE learned about each other and became stronger for it. I made new friends and was enriched by the experience.

    1. I most certainly do, she went to my 2 vets. I know EVERYTHING! He was not given pain meds and that is why he was suffering. That is the truth. I know exactly what both vets said as I said I know them and Janine told me everything. She is lying to all of you so she doesn't look bad. Call dr gshrey!!

      Delete
    2. Please let me know who these two vets are. Because I want to make sure I never use anyone who would be unprofessional enough to speak with someone else about the care of my animals without my permission.

    3. Janine told me herself! Every bit of it!

    4. First of all its against the law to discuss any animal's medical record unless you are the owner of said cat/dog or other pet. If these vets did they are leaving themselves open for a law suit.

    5. Nobody said they spoke to the vet they said they know the vets and said call and ask dr gshrey of he thought he should be killed

  15. The twisting of the truth about this disease is really upsetting me. I have had at least 5 cats with this problem and all but one have had instant relief from their teeth being removed. As in they were fine when they came home and went right to eating. I have no doubt that patches might have taken a little bit longer, to recuperate, but with you print or theme he would have been fine. Only one of my cats even ever had to stay on Fred for a while which was certainly not a big deal and not worth killing them over. I resent the fact of saying that I character assassinated Janine as I have been a strong supporter of her for years and years long before most of you even knew of her existence. She says over and over again that these are not her cats, but then when it comes to final decisions like this we aren't even supposed to register a strong opinion when we feel so damned upset over it? I feel like I'm dealing with politicians here who feel free to bend the truth, rewrite history, so that it suits their own purposes and opinions! This disease is not and should not be a death sentence, unless someone cannot afford treatment, and no one expected Janine herself to pay for this. The whole point is that a trusted friend who had a donor offered to take him and have him treated and she chose his death over that perfectly good, rational, sensible, what should have been appreciated, option. No amount of bending the statistics, accusing proposers of horrible things will change those facts. They are the facts. I and others who are so upset about this decision are not trying to assassinate Janine in any way, we still massively appreciate her efforts on the streets and everything else that she has done. We just don't think that she should make these terrible decisions without taking the facts into account. There was no reason whatsoever for patches to die and that is the facts of the situation.

  18. If Patches only had stomatitis, why would Janine want to merely put him down since she was offered the resources for the surgery? There must be more to the story regarding his health. I say back off unless you are God.
